Summary of Entrance Requirements

This information is also included in the EMT Program Packet. In order to enter the EMT Program, you must meet the following requirements:

*You can schedule to take the EMS Universal Education, LLC Reading Assessment Exam in advance. It is also offered on the first day of class.
    1. Register for the course;
    2. Pay the registration fee and tuition or setup a payment plan;
    3. Hold a High School Diploma, Home School Diploma, or General Education Degree. Students will need to send a copy of their High School Diploma or GED or send official transcripts showing that he/she graduated;
    4. The applicant must be eighteen years of age or older at the time he or she starts his or her program of study. Participants who are less than 18 years of age at the time of registration, must provide parental approval of all written and electronic forms.
    5. Accepted applicants are bound to the agreement contained on the registration form.
    6. Proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Not Expiring within the next 6 months, taken with a LIVE instructor), demonstrated by one of the following:
      • EMS University, LLC or EMS Universal Education, LLC CPR for the Healthcare Provider which you may schedule by calling/texting (800) 728-0209 or by Clicking Here.
      • AHA Healthcare Provider certification or
      • ASHI CPR Pro or
      • American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR certification.
    7. The applicant must demonstrate proficiency in reading at the 9th grade level. This will be verified through the presence of a High School Diploma or GED.
    8. Negative Drug Screening Test – not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. (must be 5 panel or greater and completed within the last 3 months). Students can arrange for a drug screening at Any Lab Test Now;
    9. Negative TB Test which may include either a PPD or chest X-ray with negative indication. Students can arrange for a TB Test by visiting Any Lab Test Now or calling (210) 824-9900 to schedule an appointment.
    10. MMR vaccination or immunity. not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. Students can arrange for an MMR vaccination by visiting Any Lab Test Now or calling (210) 824-9900 to schedule an appointment.
    11. Varicella vaccination or immunity. not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. Students can arrange for an Varicella vaccination by visiting Any Lab Test Now or calling (210) 824-9900 to schedule an appointment.
    12. Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis vaccination within the last 10 years or immunity. not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. Students can arrange for a TDAP vaccination by visiting Any Lab Test Now or calling (210) 824-9900 to schedule an appointment.
    13. Hepatitis B vaccination, immunity, or signed Hepatitis B Declination Form. not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. Students can arrange for a Hepatitis B vaccination by visiting Any Lab Test Now or calling (210) 824-9900 to schedule an appointment.
    14. Flu vaccination for the current season or waiver. Note, the waiver may not be available in all externship locations or may require the student to meet other restrictions/requirements, such as wearing a mask during time spend in the hospital, etc… not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. Students can arrange for an Flu vacinnation by visiting Any Lab Test Now or calling (210) 824-9900 to schedule an appointment.
    15. Please be kindly advised that all Students will be required to have their immunization records on file within 14 days of the course start date.
    16. Background Check (Texas Personal Review – Full #11FT12)  – not required prior to entry, but required prior to externship participation. Completing a background check can take 3-6+ weeks. Therefore, it is helpful to complete this step prior to entry into the program. The cost varies between $20-75.     17. IMPORTANT: THE BACKGROUND CHECK YOU ARE GETTING FOR CLASS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE ONE REQUIRED TO BECOME AN EMT. YOU WILL NEED TO GET AN ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND CHECK AFTER THE COURSE IN ORDER TO GET CERTIFIED. FOR OUR CLASS, USE SERVICE CODE 11FT12.
    18. NOTE: : IF THE STUDENT IS UNABLE TO COMPLETE EXTERNSHIPS AS REQUIRED BY THE SCHEDULE DUE TO NOT OBTAINING A BACKGROUND CHECK OR NOT OBTAINING LABS OR A DRUG TEST, THEY MAY BE DISMISSED FROM THE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATIVELY.
